Long, long ago, there lived a young son of a rich man, named Sumeda. His parents died when he was young, and so he inherited a huge sum of wealth from them. One day a thought occurred to him: “My parents have died, leaving all their possessions. Surely, I will also become old, ailing and one day I will die. I don’t want these possessions. I should leave all this wealth, go into the forest to become a hermit, seek merit, and seek the good life.” So he decided, and accordingly, he gave away all of his posessions to charity. Then, Sumeda went into the forest and became a hermit. He did meditation work and gained jhana insight. He became well-known as “Reverend Hermit Sumeda”.
