The Prince saw first an old man: the first of the four sights

Living in the luxury of the palace Prince has reached the age of twenty-eight.

One day, the Prince went to the royal garden, riding the four-horse Vejayanta chariot. Near the garden he saw an old man suffering from the effects of old age. The old man was a creation of the devas. The Prince the old man and was reminded of the misery of old age. He was deeply convinced and greatly frightened. So he turned from the gate of the garden and went back to the palace.
