Buddha’s sermon on Dana and Sila

Buddha’s sermon on Dana and Sila

The following morning, the Buddha and Yassa, the monk, went to the rich man’s house and took their meal. At this alms-food offering ceremony the Buddha said “Layman, rich man, do you know that in this world the good is mixed with evil?”

The rich man said: “Lord, I don’t know. Please tell us.” The Buddha said: “Layman, rich man, the evil deeds are (1) killing, (2) stealing, (3) adultery, (4) lying, (5) and taking liquor and drugs. The one who refrains from theses deeds is the one who keeps the Five Precepts (sila) and is innocent.

“Dana means giving away one’s property to others. Such charitable act is a good deed,”

the Buddha added.
